"Should we build a website, a web app or a mobile app?" is one of the first questions every founder and business owner asks us. The honest answer is that it depends on who your users are, how often they use the product, and what they need from their phone. This guide compares web app vs mobile app on the points that matter, so you can decide what to build first.

What is the difference?

A web app runs in the browser on any device, from a laptop to a phone. There is nothing to install: users open a link and start working. A mobile app is installed from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and runs natively on the phone, with deeper access to features such as the camera, location and notifications.

A third option, the progressive web app (PWA), is a web app that can be added to the home screen and work partly offline, which is a useful middle ground.

Web app vs mobile app at a glance

  • Reach: a web app works for anyone with a browser and is found through Google. A mobile app must be discovered and installed from an app store.
  • Speed to launch: web apps usually launch faster, with one codebase and no store review.
  • Cost: web apps are typically cheaper to build and maintain. With Flutter, one mobile codebase serves both Android and iOS, which narrows the gap.
  • User experience: mobile apps feel smoother for daily, on-the-go use and can work fully offline.
  • Engagement: push notifications and a home-screen icon help mobile apps bring users back.
  • Updates: web apps update instantly for everyone, while mobile updates go through app store releases.

When to build a web app first

A web app is usually the right first step when:

  • your users work at a desk, such as staff using an ERP, admin dashboard or booking system,
  • you need people to find you through Google search,
  • you want to launch quickly and test the idea with real users,
  • the product involves complex screens such as reports, tables and forms.

When a mobile app is worth it

A mobile app earns its place when:

  • customers use the product daily or several times a week, as with delivery, booking or loyalty apps,
  • you rely on the camera, GPS, offline use or push notifications,
  • field staff need to work where connectivity is unreliable,
  • a home-screen presence is part of your brand.

The smart path: start with one, plan for both

Many successful products follow the same path: launch a web app to prove the idea and serve customers on every device, then add a mobile app for the users who come back most often. If both apps share one backend and API from the start, the second platform costs far less to add. We build web apps with Next.js and React and mobile apps with Flutter, connected to the same backend, so nothing has to be rebuilt.

What each typically costs and takes

A focused web app or MVP is often delivered in 2–4 weeks. A cross-platform Flutter app, or a larger platform with an admin panel and integrations, usually takes 6–12 weeks. Building in milestones means you can launch the core first and add features based on real usage.

Frequently asked questions

Is a web app cheaper than a mobile app?

Usually, yes, because one codebase runs on every device and there is no app store process. Cross-platform tools like Flutter reduce the cost of mobile apps considerably.

Can one app work on both Android and iPhone?

Yes. With Flutter we build a single codebase that ships to both Android and iOS, with native performance.

Can I start with a web app and add a mobile app later?

Yes, and it is often the smartest path. Designing a shared backend from the start makes adding a mobile app later faster and cheaper.

Will a web app work on phones?

Yes. A well-built web app is responsive and works on any screen size, and it can be installed on the home screen as a progressive web app.
